If you’re like us, when you plan an event, you put your heart and soul into it. You spend months organizing every aspect of the day. You select the theme, colors, hors d’oeuvres, seating arrangements, thank-you gifts … the list goes on and on. The week of the event, you feel confident and ready to be the most charming hostess your guests have ever seen. Suddenly you realize … you need an outfit!

Deciding what to wear can be the one of the most stressful part of planning an event. Try not to panic, attempt to relax, and take a look at our helpful how-to on selecting your perfect outfit:

Don’t Try Too Hard

Try to avoid going into only one store and putting together an entire outfit. Mixing and matching designers is a simple way to achieve a look that’s natural. Start with the main piece of your outfit, let’s say a cocktail dress, and look for a complementing tuxedo blazer from another store. The result will appear effortlessly chic.

Shop Early

Although you want to appear as natural and as effortless as possible, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to shop for your outfit. Waiting until 7 p.m. the night before only leads to stress, and being stressed makes it difficult to make decisions. If you don’t leave yourself enough time to peruse and ponder over your possibilities, nothing you try on is going to feel “right.” You’ll leave feeling discouraged and resigned to rummaging through your closet.

Be Yourself

If you’re the kind of person who has never worn high heels, don’t try to play hostess in a pair of platform stilettos. Sparkly ballet flats are just as stylish. It’s always fun to break out of your style comfort zone, but it will show if you’re wearing something that you are uncomfortable in. Be natural, be yourself, and whatever you end up wearing will be perfect.

Be Prepared

So you followed all of the steps and selected the perfect outfit for your event. At least it seemed perfect when you bought it. You might put on the outfit the day of the event and decide that you actually don’t like the cardigan you chose to go with the blouse. It’s OK! Browse your closet for a replacement. Maybe your favorite blazer goes much better with the blouse. Don’t fret about wearing something that’s not brand new. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.

Finally, be sure to put on your most beautiful accessory: that gorgeous smile! Genuinely enjoying your event along with your guests is the most important part of your look, without a doubt.
